1. How do I care for my purchases from The Singapore Shawl (TSS)?

Many of our products are delicate and require special care.

Snagging is perhaps the most common problem one encounters. It is recommended that you take special care when product comes into contact with accessories that may cause snagging. Typical examples of such accessories to look out for are fasteners of bracelets, necklaces and hairpins, ornate rings, earrings and watches. If you have long fingernails, clench your hands before sliding your hands or arms underneath the shawls.

Shawls that have embellished crystals must not be ironed on directly. A cloth should be placed on top of the shawl to prevent from accidental removal of crystals and other embellishments.

Shawls with fasteners may have hooks sewn next to them. Take care to hook the "eye" and not snag the shawl.

Normal usage of our products does not require frequent washing but airing after each wear. Please refer to washing instructions in this FAQ page.

2. What are the washing instructions for my purchase?

We recommend dry cleaning of your product, especially those with crystals and embellishments. If you have purchased one of our recycled bamboo fabric products, note that the bamboo fabric has a special property that neutralises unpleasant odour. Normal airing is recommended.

3. Are the crystal embellishments secure? What if it falls off?

The crystals should not fall off under normal usage. Should any of the crystals be dislodged, please contact us and we can provide free re-embellishment of the crystals. Send email to store@thesingaporeshawl.com for your re-embellishment request.

This applies only to crystals and not to jade or pre-set embellishments. Jade and sem-precious embellishments, however, can be re-used on re-purchased TSS shawls for a small labour fee.

4. What are the ways I can wear my shawl or scarf?

We have produced 2 videos that demonstrate the various ways of wearing a shawl with fasteners and the shrug. See embedded YouTube video below. For other types of shawls and accessories, there are plenty of examples produced by third party that you can view in YouTube.

5.  Can I request for a custom designed shawl? How much will it cost?

Yes! It is our Creative Director Shelley’s Siu's passion to design a shawl for you. She has been designing shawls in the last decade for individuals, corporates and dignitaries. It will be a pleasure for her to provide you with a custom designed shawl, be it a single exclusive piece or a bulk order. Send an email to info@thesingaporeshawl.com with the following information:

  • Your name, email and other contact details
  • The recipient of the shawl/s i.e. age, lifestyle, culture, personal preferences etc.
  • Any specific preferences with regards to fabric, colours, embellishments, embroidery, classical vs contemporary and any other preferences
  • Actual use of the shawl. For example: as an evening accessory to a black gown or to be worn bare shoulders etc.
  • Budget and number of pieces required.

Due to the varied types of fabric, the design intricacies and the required production process, the price of a shawl will also vary greatly. A single exclusive piece of customized shawl may vary from S$200 to S$1000. In rare cases where expensive jewellry is required, a single shawl may cost S$2000 or more.
